In honor of Nina Simone’s birthday, I shared her signature song “I put a spell on you,” not thinking that in 2017 people literally believe they can put a spell on someone. Then I read that Friday, February 24 witches from around the world put spells on Trump.
At first I thought it was yet another fake news story. After all, “spell” is voodoo, root, magical words, incantations, potions… But after cross checking several news sites, including interviews with professed witches, it appears this is true. Hopefully, witch trials and burnings will not resurface.
As an artist, I prefer political, social justice songs and spellbinding love songs to witchery. “Free Mama Earth! She gave you birth and what you do to Earth you do to you…” “Some live in clouds; away from the crowds…Some live in camps; starving and damp…say NO! No hunger no homelessness!” “When we’re together, don’t want it to end. You are my lover; my true friend. When we’re together, time won’t stand still. You are my heartbeat. You’re my thrill!!!”
