The power of music

Why are rappers called “thugs” while rockers and EDM ravers are called “misguided youths?”  New York City police commissioner Bratton recently said “rap artists are basically thugs” after 1 person died and several were injured at a T.I. concert.  Whenever I hear words like “thugs” and “super predators” I know they are euphemisms for black and brown youth.  What about the conscious rappers who rap about crimes committed against them historically and presently? What about fun rappers like “Kid ‘n Play?” Are they thugs?

People die at EDM concerts, but I never heard the artists referred to as “thugs.” How many people died from illegal drugs sold and consumed at Las Vegas’ Electric Daisy Carnival?  A guy was so high at Utah Element 11, he set himself on fire.  How many killed at Pearl Jam’s performance at Denmark’s Roskilde Festival? Germany’s Love Parade? Future Music Festival Asia? Why are rappers disparaged while other musicians playing EDM & rock are given a pass?

I’m not a rapper.  Like most artists, I only listen to my own music; (only slightly kidding).  Seriously though, anyone who has heard my music knows I’m all about one love and social justice.  I am not in the rap demographics; however, I respect how rap artists expressed their reality through music and built something from nothing.  People of all races listen to rap; dress and talk like rappers. I hope that one day, someday, music will truly unite our species and racism will go the way of the dinosaur. If not, climate change (slow suicide) or nuclear warfare (fast suicide) will be our future. Free Mama Earth! (You know I would find some way of working my song “Free Mama Earth!” into this blog.) #smile

One Love…
