Sony Records is spending well over a million dollars in attorney’s fees and costs to keep Ke$ha shackled to a man who Ke$ha alleges drugged, raped her and emotionally abused her for 10 years (she’s 29 now) for the purpose of controlling her life (i.e. her business, where she lived, who she could associate with, etc). Ke$ha further alleges the abuse was so severe that it triggered an eating disorder and she had to be checked into a facility for medical treatment. If Ke$ha and Dr Luke were married like Ike and Tina Turner, everyone would recognize it as domestic violence, but since the relationship is producer and artist, Sony convinced the judge to deny Ke$ha’s request for a preliminary injunction so that she could record her music freely with another producer, accepting Sony’s argument that as long as Dr Luke was not in the recording studio with Ke$ha, she should remain signed to her contract with Dr Luke/Sony. When I saw Ke$ha’s face contorted with tears walking out of that courtroom, I wanted to give her a hug and tell her calmly and clearly that this was merely one battle and she would win the war.
I have a teenage daughter who is a very gifted pianist and composer. I worry about her facing the “casting couch.” I applaud Ke$ha’s courage fighting misogyny and suing Goliath, Sony Records. With regard to the many female artists who either remain silent or whisper off the record what Dr Luke did to them, hopefully they will grow a backbone and testify on behalf of Ke$ha. While I understand their desire not to be blacklisted and lose their fame and fortune, all that you have is your soul. Fame and fortune can be taken away from you in the blink of an eye through death, war, anarchy, etc., but when you stand up for your rights and the rights of others who are being abused and treated in a disparate manner, then your legacy lives on long after you’re gone.
One Love… Aria
