My ever present smile finally disappeared after waiting 30 minutes in the “returns” line while the check out employees helped people from the “purchases” line. I was the lone black person in the store and the only customer in the “returns” line. Just as I readied myself to confront this discriminatory treatment and took out my phone to record, a diminutive elderly white lady walked up to me and asked if this was the returns line. I said:
“Yes, Mam.”
She told me she’s glad I’m tall, because she’s so short the sales ladies won’t see her. I smiled and my shoulders relaxed. Then she shared how she had a stroke, just got out the hospital and how grateful she is to be able to talk and walk.
Looking up straight into my eyes, she declared:
“Every day you’re alive and well, is a glorious day.“
My anger evaporated. I said:
“Ma, please get in front of me so that you won’t have to stand so long to return.”
She said:
“Oh, I don’t have anything to return. A good spirit told me to talk to you.”
Guardian angels come in all shapes, sizes and colors.
“I Smile, no one can steal my joy. Smile, like a kid with a new toy. I don’t wanna cry. Smile, it’s a natural high. I smile, to hide the hurt inside. Smile…”
Peace and One Love…
