I’ll be attending the Green Festival at the Los Angeles Convention Center September 25 and 26 promoting my environmental song “Free Mama Earth,” talking with “green media” and interfacing with vendors selling all kinds of cool “green” eco friendly products. So naturally I’ve been meditating on what it means to be green.
My late father, Rev. Alfred Edwards, taught me that we are stewards of the Earth. We would go for long walks in the woods behind our farm amidst the pine and moss covered oak trees as he told stories, parables and proverbs about Mama Earth. “We who are alive now do not inherit the land from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” “If you take care of the earth, the earth will take care of you.” Teaching your children to love and respect nature is green. Walking is green. Driving an electric vehicle is green. Developing renewable energy like wind, solar and water is green. Building houses from sustainable products like borax treated bamboo is green. Practicing peace in this age of nuclear weapons is green. People organizing to stop human caused climate change is green…
Pope Francis has said that “protecting the planet is no longer a choice, but a moral duty.” Speaking to the president of Ecuador, urging him to respect the indigenous people’s plea not to destroy their home – the Amazon, the Pope tried to convince President Correa to change his mind about letting China drill for oil in the Amazon rainforest. Pope Francis called on students at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador to take action. “One thing is for certain: we can no longer turn our backs on reality, on our brothers and sisters; on Mother Earth.” Protecting our oceans, air, forests from those intent on destroying Earth is green.
One Love,
Aria
