“Crime is increasing/ Trigger happy policing/ Panic is spreading/ God knows where we’re heading/ Make me wanna holler way they do my life…” (” Inner City Blues” from “What’s Going on” album.) Marvin Gaye (RIP) wrote and sang these words 44 years ago. Instead of getting better, things have gotten worse.
In 1972 Baltimore had 130 recreation centers where poor kids could swim, play ball, and have fun. By 2014, Baltimore had only 40 rec centers, closing almost all of the rec centers in poor, African American neighborhoods as well as stopping PAL (Police Activities League) sports programs, rationalizing cops are not social workers. So, Baltimore “saves” $400,000 a year and children lose safe havens where they can temporarily escape the drugs and crime and dream about a different, better life. Wow!
I’m working on a new song; expressing my feelings about #Ferguson #Charleston #Baltimore #New York #Cleveland…
One Love…
